Nathan Hiatt was born on 18 September 1843. He grew up in Farmland, Indiana in Randolph County. Nathan's father was strongly against slavery, working in anti-slavery societies and taking in fugitive slaves on one occasion. Nathan joined the Indiana 84th Infantry on 2 August 1862. On 20 September 1863, about one month after the letter in this collection was written, he was killed at Chickamauga, Georgia.
