Pope Family.
Family of Nathaniel Pope, a lawyer from Kentucky who settled in Kaskaskia, Illinois and was instrumental in Illinois becoming a state in 1818. U.S. circuit judge, 1819-1850. Married to Lucretia Backus of Connecticut in 1809 and their children were William, Penelope, Elizabeth, John, Lucretia and Cynthia. Cousin of Ninian Edwards, governor of Illinois.
