McAllister was born in Indianapolis and attended Shortridge High School. He was drafted late in 1942 and trained as a radio operator and turret gunner. He was stationed in England in the 561st Bomb Squad, 388th Bomb Group, on the crew of the bomber "Pandora." The "Pandora" was shot down near Vechta, Germany on its 15th mission in February of 1944.
