Shiou-chuan Sun was born on May 11, 1911, sometimes given as April 5, 1910, in Penglai, Shantung, China. He received his bachelor's degree in mining and metallurgy at Pei-Yang University in 1936 and his master's degree in the same subject from the Missouri School of Mines in 1938. He completed his doctor of science degree in metallurgy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1945. In 1946 he joined the Penn State faculty as assistant professor of mineral preparation, and became an associate professor in 1951 and then received his full professorship in 1957. Sun's research centered on coal production, properties, and uses. He studied the characterization of anthracite coal refuse, relative grindability of coal lithotypes, effective removal of sulfur from coal and coal refuse, and electrokinetic study of the absorption of water pollutants by coal lithotypes and mineral matters in coal mine refuse for the manufacturing of building materials. He retired in 1976, and died on November 16, 1981.
