Gerald Hallam Cooke, born in 1889, enlisted with the Indian Army Reserve of Officers and went to East Africa as a volunteer Maxim gunner (Bombay Maxim Gun Company) in September 1914. He was given a Commission in October 1915 and posted to the 130th Baluchis, but seconded as Special Staff Officer to the 2nd Kashmiri Imperial Service Infantry. He served during the advance into German East Africa to the Rufiji River, returned to India in 1917, and was sent to Palestine in June 1918.
