Edward and his brother, Duncan, were Civil War soldiers in Company B, 33rd Illinois Infantry.

Both brothers were from Peoria County, Ill., and served from August 1861 to November 1865. Duncan rose from corporal to regimental adjutant (1st lieutenant) during that time.
