Nickleś was born in the Alsace-Lorraine in 1821 and spent his life researching and publishing in the fields of pharmacy, water chemistry, electromagnetism, and metallurgy.

Nickleś began his scientific career as an apprentice pharmacist in 1840 and went on to study medicine in 1844 and to teach chemistry. In 1854 Nickleś was appointed to the Faculted́es Sciences, where he remained until his death in 1869. During his career, Nickleś initiated debates with French and German colleagues over the causes of fermentation, as well as exploring industrial applications of chemistry.
