The UGA School of Environmental Design was established as a separate college in 1969 with internationally known landscape architect Hubert B. Owens as dean. At the time of the school's establishment, Dean Owens said one of the the program's goals was to "intensify the training of landscapers for their new role on the urban design team of planners, architects, engineers and social planners." (--The Atlanta Journal and Constitution 2 February, 1969.) In 2001 the Institute of Ecology combined with the School of Environmental Design to form the College of Environment and Design. This was only temporary though and in July 2007 the Institute of Ecology separated from the college and became a separate entity.
