Kneeland, a resident of Tecumseh (Mich.), entered service in Aug. 1862 as a 1st Sgt. of the Michigan Infantry Regiment, 18th, Company I. He was promoted to 2nd Lt. in Dec. 1862, served as Aide-de-Camp on the staff of Brig. Gen. Gillmore, Jan.-June, 1863; and was promoted to 1st Lt. of Company E in Dec. 1863. He served as Aide-de-Camp on the staff of Gen. Gordon Granger, Dec. 1864-June 1865. He was mustered out in June 1865 at Nashville (Tenn.).
