Attorney, Iowa Senator, and judge. William Corwin Stuart was born in 1920 and graduated from Iowa State College in 1941. In 1942 he received his J.D. degree and was admitted to the Iowa Bar Association. He also served in the U.S. Air Force (1943-1946) and afterwards joined the law practice of his father in Chariton, Iowa. His political career began in 1946, when he was named city attorney for Chariton. In 1953 he was elected to the Iowa State Senate where he served until 1961.
From 1961 until 1971 Stuart was an Associate Justice on the Iowa Supreme Court and in 1971, he became U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Iowa. Stuart was a member of the American Legion, American and Iowa Bar Associations, and the American Judicative Society.
