Joan Lowery Nixon has written over 100 books including early readers, young adult fiction, adult nonfiction, basic science for schoolage readers, Biblical adaptations, and a "how-to" on writing for school age people. Joan Lowery Nixon was born in Los Angeles, in 1927, and attended USC and California State College. She began teaching elementary school in Los Angeles, married, and moved to Texas, where she began her career as "The grande dame of mysteries for young readers," as several reviewers have called her. She has written more than 100 books including early readers and young adult fiction, nonfiction for adults, basic science for school age readers, Biblical adaptations, and a "how-to" on creative story-form writing for elementary school children. Her Oprhan Train" quartet is based on the social welfare program created by the Children's Aid Society in the mid-19th century, and she drew on her years attending Hollywood High School to create the Hollywood Daughters and the Maggie series. She has won the Edgar Award for mystery writers four times, and another five of her books has been nominated for it.
