Hoff, G. Whitney (Grace Whitney), 1862-1938
Variant namesGrace Whitney, daughter of David and Flora Ann (McLauchlin) Whitney, was born in Detroit, Oct. 22,1862. She attended Detroit Public Schools, The Liggett School, and Hellmuth College in London, Ont. In 1880 she married John E. Evans, and they had a daughter born in 1888. Evans died in 1892. In 1893 Mrs. Evans became the first president of the Detroit Y.W.C.A. On Apr. 3,1900 she married John Jacob Hoff, an American associated with the Standard Oil Company in Paris. Always interested in human welfare, Mrs.Hoff early began a life of public service. In 1906, she built a hostel for American girls studying In Paris. During World War I she was active in aiding American soldiers. In 1923, Mrs. Hoff was awarded the Palmes Academiques and in 1925 was elected to the Legion of Honor. She died in Ouchy, Switzerland, Dec.18,1938. (Detroit Free Press, Dec. 20, 1938) (blue index cards)
