The Deputy Director works closely with the Director and other administrators to promote efficient and effective use of resources. The position of Deputy Director was first created in 1983, abolished in 1984, and restored in 1986. Harry Lowe, the first Deputy Director, also served in a number of other positions which had similar kinds of responsibilities. Lowe was Deputy Director during 1983. Charles J. Robertson served as Associate Administrator, 1978-1983; Assistant Director, Resources, and Assistant Director, Museum Resources, 1983-1985, during which he seems to have performed some of the same duties he took up when the Deputy Director's position was restored, serving 1986-2001. Rachel M. Allen became the Deputy Director in 2002.
