Lawrence (Larry) Mintz was a professor of American Studies at the University of Maryland from 1969-2007. He lectured and wrote extensively on the subject of humor as well as popular culture. Mintz graduated with a BA in English from the University of South Carolina in 1966, then his MA in English from Michigan State University in 1967, and got his Ph.D. in American Studies/English from Michigan State University in 1969. After receiving his Ph.D. he became a faculty member at the University of Maryland in the Department of American Studies. He taught courses on American humor, popular culture, and intellectual and cultural history. While there, he developed and then directed the Art Gliner Center for Humor Studies. Mintz became a Professor Emeritus of the University of Maryland in 2007. During his career he was the editor of Humor: International Journal of Humor Research, and in 1988 he was the editor for Humor in America. Mintz has written many scholarly articles, reviews, and book chapters, as well as lectured extensively on the topics of American humor and popular culture.
