(Florence) Edith Ball was born on Feb. 7, 1911 in Pickford (Mich.), the daughter of William H. and Elizabeth (Bassett) Ball. She grew up in Sault Ste. Marie (Mich.). A professional seamstress, she married Angelo Pingatore (d.), whose family was well-established in the tailoring and drycleaning business in the Soo. From 1941 to 1956 she worked as an arts and crafts instructor at Newberry State Hospital. Later, the Pingatores moved to Mount Pleasant (Mich.) where Angelo was employed at the Mount Pleasant State Home and Training School. Edith earned both a B.S. in art and social science (1959) and a M.A. in special education (1966) from Central Michigan University (CMU). A special education supervisor at the State Home, 1956-1976, Edith also taught special education at CMU, 1969-1977. The Pingatores divorced in 1960. Edith was also a Michigan author. Copies of her History of the Mt. Pleasant Indian School, 1893-1934 are available in the Clarke Historical Library. A member of Sacred Heart Church and several women's clubs, Edith lived in Mt. Pleasant until her death on Oct. 25, 2002. She was survived by a brother, five grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. Her son, Frederick, preceded her in death.
