Earl Parks Welch was born in Derita, North Carolina (now a neighborhood in the northern part of Charlotte) in 1895. He attended North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University), where he was a member of the college's Cadet squad, eventually graduating in 1920. While enrolled, Welch joined the Army, serving in various locations around the southeastern United States in the late 1910s, being promoted in rank several times. Welch died in 1984.
