North Carolina Council of Women's Organizations

This organization was formed in 1952 as the North Carolina Women's Council, and served as a clearinghouse for women's groups, in order to prevent duplication of effort and to provide the opportunity for groups to act together in areas of special interest to women. In 1955 the name of the agency was changed to North Carolina Council of Women's Organizations. In 1956 it became a cooperative service of the University of North Carolina Extension Division. The organization was chartered in 1959 and its activities were extended to include safety, continuing education and the implementation of a report on the status of women. By 1970 the organization included 39 affiliated organizations with a total membership of more than a half million women. Dr. Guion Griffis Johnson served as the first president from 1952 to 1958.
