The Central of Georgia Railway, formed from its predecessor, The Central Railroad and Banking Company of Georgia in 1895 was a dominant force in the economic life of Georgia and parts of Alabama through the mid-twentieth century. Through its many branch and subsidiary lines, land holding companies, and agricultural experimentation, it controlled much of the region's transportation and was a strong influence in the rural development of the area.
(Cont.) The Empire Land Company was chartered in 1903 in Fulton County, Georgia. The company bought and sold land in Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama. By 1950, The Empire Land Company changed its primary office from Fulton County to Chatham County, Georgia and bought the capital stock of the Port Wentworth Corporation. Port Wentworth Corporation also owned the stock of Midland Properties Company, and both companies merged with the Empire Land Company in 1969. The new company retained the Empire Land Company title.
