Henry Davies Hicks was born 5 March 1915 at Bridgetown, Nova Scotia. Hicks received a Bachelor of Arts from Mount Allison University in 1936, a Bachelor of Science from Dalhousie University in 1937, and a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Civil Law from Oxford University in 1939 and 1940 respectively. In 1941, he joined the army and became a specialist in radar. He had reached the rank of captain by the time of his discharge in 1945. In October 1945, Hicks was elected the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Annapolis County, as a member of the Liberal Party. Also in 1945, Hicks married Paulene Banks, and they had four children. In 1949, Hicks was appointed as Nova Scotia's first Minister of Education. He remained in this position until in 1954 when he was elected premier. At the age of 39, Hicks was the youngest premier in Canada. He lost this position in 1956. Nonetheless, Hicks remained the leader of the Liberal Party until his defeat in his own riding in 1960. Later that year, he was hired as the Dean of Arts and Science at Dalhousie University. Hicks served as dean until his appointment in 1963 as President of Dalhousie University. In April 1972, he was appointed to the Senate by Prime Minister Trudeau. Hicks balanced his two jobs until his resignation as President of Dalhousie University in 1980. He remained in the Senate until his retirement in March 1990. Henry Davies Hicks died 9 December 1990.
