Itimous Thaddeus Valentine, Sr., was born in Nash County, N.C., in 1887. A graduate of Guilford College and the Wake Forest College Law School, Judge Valentine practiced law in Nash County, served in World Wars I and II, and was an associate justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. During World War II, he attained the rank of lieutenant colonel and was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service in the India-Burma theater.
