Melvin Ormond Hammond was born in Clarkson, Ontario, on July 17, 1876, the son of Alvin and Catharine (Nauman) Hammond. He began his newspaper career as a 14 year old working for the Oakville Star. Three years later he went to work for the Toronto Globe. He became a political reporter for the Globe. He also became a skilled photographer and the author of three books. He died in 1934.
