As a freelance journalist, Stephen Harrigan has written articles for several publications including Rolling stone, The Texas observer and Texas monthly. He received the Dobie Paisano fellowship in 1977 and acted as president of the Texas Institute of Letters from 1985-87. From 1973-78 Harrigan edited a small poetry magazine titled Lucille. Harrigan is the author of Aransas, published in 1980, and Jacob's Well, published in 1984. He became senior editor of Texas monthly in 1983 and published A Natural state, a book of essays from that publication in 1988.
