Born in Holland; came to U.S., with his family at age of 4 and settled in Cambridge, Mass.; served with Company D, 5th Massachusetts Volunteers during Civil War; married Lois A. Ellis in 1869; moved to Ontario, Calif., 1895 and opened dry goods store there; elected to California State Assembly, 1899, 1901, 1911; involved with GAR; in 1913 retired from business and moved to Whittier, Calif., where remained until his death.
