John V. Healy was born in Butte, Montana, on September 2, 1917, the son of Cornelius and Margaret (O'Sullivan) Healy. He attended Butte High School, but had to drop out to support his younger sisters after both his parents died. About 1933 he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and then returned to Butte to work as a miner. He was elected to the Montana Legislative Assembly in 1942, 1944, 1956, and 1958. After the 1959 copper miners' strike in Butte, Healy left Butte for Reno, Nevada, where he worked in the casino business.

In 1938 John married Rosalie Spall. They had two daughters Deanna and Mary Elizabeth. John V. Healy died in Reno, Nevada, on May 26, 2003.
