DeBerniere family.
John A. DeBerniere, a native of Ireland who became a British army officer, immigrated to the U.S. in 1799 with his family; first settling in North Carolina, and later residing in Columbia, S.C., and Charleston, S.C. The DeBerniere family for many years kept up a frequent correspondence with relations and friends in Great Britain, including Elizabeth Longley DeBerniere, John A. DeBerniere's sister-in-law, and sister of the Archbishop of Canterbury (Charles Thomas Longley, 1794-1868).
