William Green Mather (1901-1987) obtained his bachelor of science degree from Denison University in 1924, his bachelor of divinity degree from Rochester Theological Seminary in 1927, when he became an ordained Baptist clergyman, and his master's and doctoral degrees in rural sociology from Cornell University in 1935 and 1936, respectively. From 1934 to 1942 Mather was head of the department of sociology and economics at Franklin College. From 1942 to 1945 he served as a professor of sociology for DePauw University. He came to Penn State in 1945 as a professor of rural sociology, and became head of the department of sociology and anthropology in 1954. He retired from Penn State with emeritus status in 1969.
