The Ala. Women's Commission serves as a continuing vehicle to determine effective policy and legislation in areas of interest to Ala.'s women. The fifteen members who comprise the Women's Commission are appointed as follows: the Speaker of the House of Representatives appoints three members from the House for two-year terms, the President of the Senate appoints two members from the Senate for two-year terms, and the Governor appoints ten members, seven of whom must be women. The ten members appointed by the Governor must be so distributed that each congressional district is represented by one member, and the others represent the state at large. Five of the original appointees of the Governor serve three-year terms, and five serve five-year terms. Subsequent gubernatorial appointees serve three year terms. (Ala. Government Manual, 1982)
In 1971, the Ala. Women's Commission was created. The Board was authorized to study the status of women in the State of Ala. and make recommendations to the Governor and Legislature for constructive action in the following areas: labor laws dealing with hours, wages, and working conditions; legal rights and responsibilities; policies and practices with regard to education, counselling and job training; citizen volunteers; and home and community. Additionally, the Commission was authorized to submit an annual report to the Governor and the Legislature of its activities and findings and any suggested legislation which would aid in accomplishing its objectives, as well as to initiate and/or execute all activities deemed pertinent to the expedition of the Commission's causes, functions, and duties. (Acts 1971, No. 1937, Sec. 1-8)
Currently, the Chairman and other officers deemed necessary by the members are elected by the membership. The Commission is authorized to appoint committees and task forces to achieve its goals. At least three meetings must be held each year. The Board is funded through legislative appropriations. (Ala. Government Manual, 1982)
