Founded in 1885, the Michigan Music Teachers' Association (MMTA) was/is a member of the Music Teachers' National Association. An important function of the MMTA is certifying private and college music teachers through its Board of Certification. The Board conducts auditions, selects judges, evaluates reports of judges and the credentials of applicants, and issues certificates to qualified candidates. MMTA holds an annual conference. It also creates and distributes its own newsletters, directories, and conference programs. (Information from the collection.).
