The Committee on the History of the College was established in or before 1951 at North Carolina State College to coordinate the naming and dedication of campus buildings and roads, and to collect documentation on the history of the college. In this capacity, the committee oversaw the establishment of the College's archives, and made decisions on which materials would be collected in the archives until 1965, at which time the University Archives was organized as a separate unit, with an archivist position appointed by the state of North Carolina to what was then North Carolina State University for the first time. As a part of this organizational change, the Committee on the History of the College was renamed the Committee on Institutional History and the Naming of Buildings.

The duties of the committee following the 1965 re-organization shifted to primarily deciding on matters involving naming buildings and other campus entities, and to planning annual events to highlight and commemorate the University's history, such as Founder's Day. In 1972, the committee's name was changed to the Committtee on Commemoration, Institutional History, and Naming of Buildings; was changed again in 1977 to the Committee on Institutional History and Commemoration; and was changed sometime in the 1980s to the Institutional History and Commemoration Committee.

This committee was formally dissolved in 2009.
