Hazel Green Academy.

Hide Profile

W.O. Mize, J.T. Day, and Green Berry Swango founded Hazel Green Academy in 1880. Eventually, administration and financial support were shifted to agencies of the Disciples of Christ (Christian) Church: the Christian Women's Board of Missions in 1886, and then the United Christian Missionary Society in 1919. Formal support from the national church ended in 1971. The Academy was a boarding school throughout its ninety-six years and the curriculum included both college preparatory and vocational courses. A sizable physical plant developed along with fairly extensive land holdings. For a time the Academy maintained its own electric and water systems, hospital and community health clinic, 212-acre demonstration farm, kindergarten, used clothing store, and community library.
