Pioneer ranchers in San Joaquin County. Mary Kimball Rhodes came with her stepson, William H. Rhodes, to California from Texas (1850), leaving behind her younger children and husband, Elisha Rhodes, who was incapacitated by a stroke. In California she joined a relative, Dr. Robert H. Rhodes and opened a San Francisco boarding house. Later she ran a store in Stockton (1851), then returned to Texas and brought her husband and children to California (1852). Elisha Rhodes purchased 320 acres five miles east of Stockton, naming it "Windsor Farm." He died in 1858, but Mary Rhodes continued to operate ranch until 1893. William H. Rhodes (d. 1876), became a literary figure in California during early years of statehood. He published fiction and poetry under name "Caxton."
