Cochran family.
South Carolina family. Captain Robert Cochran (d. 1824) of Massachusetts was a merchant seaman who settled in Charleston, South Carolina in 1763. In that same year he married Mary Elliott (d. 1829), eldest daughter of Artemas Elliott. During the Revolutionary War Robert Cochran served in the South Carolina Navy and in 1776 was commissioned to France to procure equipment for the South Carolina Continental troops. After the fall of Charleston he was imprisoned at St. Augustine for a period, while his family was temporarily exiled to Philadelphia (Pa.). His children included Robert Elliott Cochran and Charles Burnham Cochran (1766-1833). Charles Burnham Cochran's daughter was Mary Eugenia Cochran (1791-1847); she married Peter Bacot, son of Thomas Wright Bacot (1765-1834) and Jane DeSaussure, in 1810.
