Pacifist and peace activist; Quaker; active in New York Friends Group, World Without War Council, Negotiation Now!, and many other organizations promoting peace and social change; affiliated with the American Friends Service Committee; married Joyce Mertz Gilmore; their personal convictions led them to be involved with and to grant funds for peace and civil rights initiatives and organizations.
