Roswell Garst, Iowa agriculturalist, innovator, and ISU alumnus (1916-1918), founded the Garst & Thomas Hybrid Corn Company in 1930. His goal was to aggressively promote hybridization, mechanization, fertilization, utilization of cellulose as fodder for cattle, as well as the use of herbicides, pesticides, and irrigation in the U.S. and abroad, in order to achieve dramatic increases in agricultural productivity.

Garst also contributed to the improvement of East-West relations and in 1959, Soviet premier Nikita Krushchev visited Garst's farm in Coon Rapids, Iowa.
