W. Lloyd Warner was born on October 26, 1898 in Redlands, California. He attended the University of Southern California and the University of California at Berkley, where he received his B.A. in anthropology in 1926. Warner also attended graduate school at Berkeley and spent three years researching in northeastern Australia.

Warner became assistant professor of Anthropology at Harvard University in 1929. In 1935, he joined the faculty of the University of Chicago where he was appointed associate professor. In the mid-1950s Warner moved to Michigan State University where he became professor of social research in 1959.

Among Warner's many published works are: A Black Civilization: A Social Study of an Australian Tribe (1937), Color and Human Nature: Negro Personality Development in a Northern City (1941), Democracy in Jonesville: A Study in Quality and Inequality (1949), American Life: Dream and Reality (1953), and The Corporation in Emergent American Society (1962).

Warner has been described as "a leader among anthropologists and sociologists who apply the research methods of cultural anthropology to the complex problems of contemporary society."

Warner married Mildred (Hall) Warner on January 10, 1932. The couple had three children: Ann, Caroline, and William Taylor.

W. Lloyd Warner died on May 23, 1970.
