Hopkins-Stanford Galapagos Expedition, 1898-1899

Hide Profile

On October 30, 1898, a collecting party sailed from San Francisco to explore and collect across the Galapagos Islands [Archipiélago de Colón], under the auspices of the department of zoology at Stanford University and financial support of Mr. Timothy Hopkins. They set out aboard the sealing schooner, Julia E. Whalen, under the command of Captain William P. Noyes. Primary collectors were Robert E. Snodgrass and Edmund Heller. They focused on collecting vertebrates, but also collected flora and fauna in general. They reached the Archipelago in December 1898, and collected in the region until June 26, 1899. They explored Cocos Island until July 2, before returning to San Francisco.
