IFIP Working Group 2.1 on Algol

The ALGOL (Algorithmic Language) programming language was developed by committees of the Association for Computing Machinery and the Gesellschaft Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik for the task of specifying computational processes on digital computers. The first version of ALGOL was published by Perlis and Samuelson in 1959 and is now known as ALGOL 58. The ALGOL Bulletin was an outgrowth of an ALGOL implementation conference held in Copenhagen, Denmark in February 1959. The Regencentralen in Copenhagen served as the production and distribution center for the irregularly published ALGOL Bulletin which was initially edited by Peter Naur.

Initially, the ALGOL Bulletin served a largely European audience since suggested changes in ALGOL in the United States were sent to ACM Communications. The last issue of the ALGOL Bulletin published by this informal group was number 15 in 1962. In 1962, the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) creating Working Group 2.1 (Working Group on ALGOL) which displaced the original group and the ALGOL Bulletin became an IFIP publication.
