Joseph Krieger was born on 9 May 1881, in Austria. He was married to Amalie Wohlfieler (3 Aug. 1885-20 June 1980). The couple came to San Francisco during their honeymoon, in 1906, and never returned to Austria. In 1917, the couple invented the tea bag for use in hotels. Joseph was a Freemason and a member of the Scottish Rite and of the Shriners. He died in San Francisco, on 2 Aug. 1968.
