The Admissions Committee, composed of faculty members, was first mentioned in the 1891-92 Indiana University catalogue. The committee was reorganized in 1942 as an all-university committee with members appointed by the president of the university. The work of the committee was to consider and recommend admissions policies, pre-college guidance procedures, and was to act as a Board of Appeals. This committee's first new chairman was Frank Elliott, director of Admissions from 1938 until his retirement in 1946. William Strain replaced Elliott as chairman that year, at that time holding the office of Assistant Registrar in charge of Admissions.

The duties assigned to the committee were to recommend admissions policies and pre-college guidance procedures and to act as a board of appeals in admissions decisions. The committee was first chaired by Frank Elliott, 1938-1946. He was succeeded by William Strain, 1946-1971.
