Shelton Palmer Sanford, educator, was born 25 January 1816, in Greensboro, North Carolina, and died 9 August 1896, in Macon, Georgia.

He was a professor of mathematics (1839-1891) and acting president (1856-1858) at Mercer University, which was located in Penfield, Greene County, Georgia (1833-1870), and moved to Macon, Georgia (1871- ).
