Martha Vicinus was an IU English Department faculty member from 1968 until 1982. She was an advocate for developing women's studies programs and was a member of the Women's Studies Coordinating Committee which recommended founding the Women's Studies Program in 1974. She served as president of the Bloomington Local American Federation of Teachers, 1975-1976, and served as editor of Victorian studies, 1970-1982. She authored several books on the history of Victorian women and gay and lesbian studies.

Martha Jeannette Vicinus was a faculty member of the Indiana University English Department from 1968-1982. She also served as editor of Victorian Studies from 1970-1982. While at Indiana University Vicinus was active in many local unions and women's organizations. She was president of the Bloomington local of the American Federation of Teachers, 1975-1976, and a member of the Women's Studies Coordinating Committee, 1974, which recommended founding of Women's Studies Program. She authored several books on the history of Victorian Women and gay and lesbian studies.

Vicinus received her B.A. from Northwestern University, 1961; her M.A. from Johns Hopkins University, 1962; and a Ph.D. from University of Wisconsin, 1968. Vicinus left the IU faculty in 1982 to take a position at the University of Michigan.
