Richard Pipes, Frank B. Baird, Jr., Professor of History at Harvard, was born in Poland in 1923. A member of the faculty since 1950, Pipes also served as Director of Harvard's Russian Research Center from 1968 to 1973. From 1981 to 1982 he was Director of East European and Soviet Affairs for the United States National Security Council.
