William Finucane was born on Corfu, and came to Queensland in 1864. He first lived at Ipswich where he was instrumental in setting up the Ipswich Punch, a manuscript literary magazine. He held a wide variety of posts in the civil service, including those of first Land Commissioner for the Normanton-Burketown district, and also commercial agent in Southern Europe, from where he succeeded in establishing trade relations between colony and Mediterranean countries.
