Orange Britell was born in Ferrisburgh, Vermont on September 13, 1801, the son of John and Elizabeth (Hobbs) Britell. Britell opened a fulling mill on the west bank of Otter Creek in Weybridge, Vermont. In 1850, Britell emigrated to California. After four years he returned to Weybridge but only remained there three years, returning to California until 1865, when he returned to Weybridge, remaining there until his death.
