James Edward Glazier of Salem, Mass., was private of Company F of the 23rd Regiment of Massachusetts Infantry. The regiment was organized in October 1861 and was attached to the special division organized by Burnside for the expedition in the Carolinas. Glazier took part in military operations in Oct. 1861- Apr. 1864, including New Bern, Resaca, expedition against Charleston, duty at New Bern and Getty Station. In May, 1864 Glazier was detailed as a male nurse and assistant to the chaplain in the U.S. General Hospital at Hampton, Va. where he remained until mid-September 1864. He was mustered out in Oct. 1864. After leaving the service, Glazier studied theology, and entered the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In Apr. 1865, he moved to Ukiah, Ca. where he farmed and occasionally worked as a bricklayer and plasterer. In June 1881, after his wife's death, he returned to Salem. He spent a year there looking for work, and in 1882 left for Florida. Having spent three years Tallahassee, in Sept. 1885 he returned to California, where he remained for the rest of his life.
