Centerville Academy (Ala.)

Hide Profile

This private academy was founded and built in Bibb Co., Ala., ca.1833. Thomas Crawford was the treasurer in 1834, and F.M. Reese the secretary. It lasted as such until 1851.

The succeeding institution was named the Masonic Institute for Educational Purposes. In 1857 the Masons bought the lot and property and used it as a school until about 1881, building a new building on the same lot in the meanwhile.

Edward H. Moren bought the old building and lot in 1870. The money he paid was used to refurbish the new building the Masons had built.
