Cushing, John, 1741-1812
John Cushing (1741-1812) was born in Boxford, Mass. He graduated from Harvard in 1761, and received an M.A. in 1765. In 1775 Cushing was Captain of a company of Boxford minutemen. He participated in the battle for Hog and Noddles Islands, and served in the Rhode Island campaign of 1778. He was sent by Boxford to the House of Representatives in 1779 and served on the committee to auction off Tory estates. In 1790 he moved to Freeport, Maine where he farmed and owned sloops which carried wood and produce to Portland. Freeport sent him to the House of Representatives in 1792-94, 1801-2, and 1809-10. Cumberland County elected him to serve as a trustee, and as a member of the first Board of Overseers of Bowdoin College.
