John How was a student at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, attending classes in Ethics and Philosophy under J lohn Law, regent for his academic year. In 1702, John How received the Wilson bursary in philosophy and continued his studies although he does not appear to have graduated. He was appointed a regent of the University in 1691 and held the post until his retirement due to ill health in 1714 .
