Dr. Freeman graduated from the College of Charleston with the Class of 1943, served as a lieutenant (jg) in the Navy from 1943-1946, graduated with a PhD in Biology (specializing in ichthylogy) at Stanford University in 1951, taught at Stanford and the University of South Carolina, was Professor of Biology at the College of Charleston from 1960-1990, was Chairman of the Department of Biology from 1960-1978, and since 1990 has been Distinguished Professor of Biology, Emeritus.
Dr. Freeman served as president of numerous organizations including the College of Charleston Alumnai Association and the South Carolina Academy of Science. His scientific research is at the Charleston Museum.
