Nickname "Peppi". Born in Plauen, Germany. Educated at the University of Munich. Member of the German national ski team for eight years and competed in numerous international competitions in Europe. Fled Germany with the rise of Nazism and coached the Spanish National and Olympic ski teams until the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. Helped to smuggle refugees out of Spain on skis, resulting in a $1,000 bounty on his life. Came to the United States in 1937. Ski and climbing instructor with the 10th Mountain Division. Posthumously inducted into the United States National Ski Hall of Fame in 1968.
